Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
