We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The story begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
